2010 DRS Texas Challenge Tournament Cancelled

All, due to scheduling conflicts with many of our players, the 2010 DRS Texas Challenge has been cancelled.  We'll work hard to arrange a schedule for 2011 that can accommodate all.  Thanks and forward any questions to me or my brother Robert.

Team DFW needs golfers

Ok, so it's that time of year again, to start thinking about playing for Team DFW!  I need golfers to play in our annual DRS Texas Challenge Cup benefiting Make-A-Wish foundation.  The tournament will be sometime this September (dates and location TBD in the next 3 weeks).

If you have a handicap of 20 or better and like tournament golf, this is for you.  My brother and I are looking for golfers to keep this tournament going.  We play a 2 and a half day cycle with a round on Friday afternoon, 2 rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday.  Team DFW leads the series 2 to 1 with Team Austin currently holding the Cup after an exciting match at the Golf Club at Frisco Lakes last year.

2010 DRS Texas Challenge Cup

Well, it's almost summer, and time to start thinking about the 2010 DRS Texas Challenge cup again.  The 4th installment of this venerable championship is back to the Austin, Texas area where Team Austin will attempt to retain the cup and Team DFW will attempt to wrest it away and be champions for the third time.

My brother and I will be scouting venues for the event to be played sometime in the September time frame this year. 

We'll have more information for you all later.  In the meantime, get those games tuned up and especially you Team DFW!

Congratulations to Team Austin

Team Austin defeated Team Dallas 10.5 to 9.5 points to take the Texas Challenge Cup home. The tournament was held at the Golf Club at Frisco Lakes from October 9 - 11. Cold, windy and wet were the conditions, but the boys from Austin took to the climate like a duck to water.

Steamrolling over Team Dallas Friday and Saturday, it looked like the tournament would end in a total wipeout. However, Team Dallas, lead by "Mr. 12 - n - 0", Eric Kaiser roared back on Sunday to take 5.5 points out of a possible 8 and the results were oh, so close. Team Austin did what they needed to do, which was win at least 2 points on Sunday to become the champions.

Tournament Update

I hope everyone is starting to tune up their games for our event in October. We are now only 7 weeks away from the tournament. We are still in need of players and sponsors, so if you have friends interested in playing or sponsoring our tournament please let me know.

We have started the search for sponsors for the event. Our target contribution for Make-A-Wish this year is to exceed $5,000.00. Letters and emails have gone out to local businesses around the Frisco, Plano and North Dallas area. DRS Texas Challenge Cup 2009

We've just signed the contract with the course and I wanted to give you the pricing for the tournament. Golf, charity donation and the Captain's Dinner come to $350 per golfer, so we have effectively kept the cost at the same level as last year.

I will need confirmation of players and deposits by the end of July.

This is a great course for our tournament and I know you'll have a great time.

Venue for The 2009 DRS Texas Challenge Selected

We have a location for our 2009 event. The Golf Club at Frisco Lakes is an exciting layout with terrific risk/reward holes. The club is located north of the Colony and is in the Del Webb subdivision called Frisco Lakes. To get there head take 121 to the Josey Ln/Main Street exit and go north about 7 miles to StoneyBrooke ln. and turn left.

I will have more information on the tournament costs, etc, but for now the course and dates are locked in. Please make sure you carve out the time on your calendars. October 9 - 11, at the Golf Club at Frisco Lakes.

Time To Start Planning for This Year's Tournament

Greetings players, I hope your 2009 is off to a good start. It's April, so time now to start planning for this years event. The DFW team will be hosting the tournament this year and we are targeting the month of October to hold the tournament. Please vote on the weekend you prefer (see the poll on the blog).

Our charity will once again be the Make - A - Wish foundation.

As to the venue, I have scoped out the following 5 golf courses and here is my preference starting with 1 being highest and 5 lowest. I welcome any comments you may have relative to location of play. Priorities under consideration include: Location (attempt to stay in the Central North DFW corridor (border is I-35W to the west and Hwy 75 to the east); Price, attempt to stay under $90 per golfer per round ( including the charity donation); Difficulty, attempt to keep the slope, distance and par ratings within reason for all golfers. 1. The Golf Club at Frisco Lakes - I've played this now a couple of times and find the layout fantastic.
2. The Trails of Frisco - Excellent Layout, I thoroughly enjoyed my outing there.
3. Bridlewood - Located in Flower Mound, excellent D.A. Weibring Layout
4. Indian Creek - Lakes Course in Carrollton - Challenging course with a lot of fun holes
5. Twin Creeks - Allen, Texas - Another good track with a challenging layout

Finally, we need more players. Robert and I would really like to get 12 committed players per side for this year. The tournament benefits greatly from increased numbers and I encourage all of our legacy players to reach out to at least one other friend or associate about playing.

Team Dallas Results

Bravo to Team Dallas Players. This year's tournament saw 3 of our players go undefeated. Eric Kaiser and Tom Ross continue their winning ways both going 4-0-0 in this year's tournment. Tournament newcomer Bill Shea also went 4-0-0 this year. Well done gentlemen!

Team Dallas Retains the Cup 13.5 to 6.5

The second annual Ryder Cup format tournament known as the DRS Texas Challenge concluded on yesterday with Team Dallas retaining the Texas Challenge Cup. Taking an 8 - 4 point lead into the singles matches on Sunday proved to be more than Team Austin could overcome. The matches were close and many came down to the 18th hole to be decided. The Dallas team returns home victorious and is anxious to defend the cup on their home turf next year. Congratulations to team Dallas.

Next Week is The Big Week!

Ok Golfers, next week we tee it up again for the 2nd DRS Texas Challenge Golf Tournment. Star Ranch is ready for us and we will begin the tournament at 1:30 on Friday afternoon.

For the DFW team, please plan on about a 3.5 hour trip and plan on getting to the course around 11:30 - 12:00 noon. From my house North of DFW Airport, the trip is about 210 miles. If you are coming from McKinney or Plano, probably add another 10-15 miles to the trip. I think if you get started by 8:00am, you should have not trouble getting to the course by noon. Lunch will be served at the course, and you probably want to hit the range for a bit. There will be some announcements regarding pairings for Friday afternoon's round and other tournament information.

Tournament Information - We're getting close to Tee Time!

We are finalizing our arrangements for this year's event. Our tournament dates are October 10th,11th, and 12th (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and we will be playing at Star Ranch in Hutto.

Our format will be the same as last year...Friday afternoon four ball, Saturday AM four ball, Saturday PM alternate shot, and Sunday AM single matches.

Our sponsored charity this year is the Make-A-Wish Foundation which provides a wonderful service for very ill children.

By September 19th, we will need to get final confirmation of players and payments coming in. Please see the information below for tournament costs. For the DFW team who will be traveling, estimate $75 per night for hotel and dinner for 2 nights. The anticipated total cost for the tournament is approximately $500 for the travelers and $350 for the locals (Austinians)

For payment, we'll need a couple of checks from you. One for the charity and one for the golf. Golf includes the 4 rounds of golf, prizes and breakfast and lunch Saturday and Sunday. Please make out two separate checks. One for $250 to DRS Texas Challenge Golf Tournament and the other for $100 made out to the Make-A-Wish foundation.

Charity Selected for This Year's Tournament

Players, the charity selected for this year's Texas Challenge Cup is the Make A Wish Foundation. Please click on the highlighted text to go to their site and read up on the terrific work they do.

As with last year's event, a portion of your tournament entry fee will go to the foundation. The great thing about tournaments like this is you have a great time and help out some folks who really need it.

Tournament Dates selected - Texas Challenge Cup for 2008

Golfers, please note the dates for the 2008 Texas Challenge Cup are October 10-12. We will kick-off with an afternoon tee-time (around 1:30 - 2pm) and play our first Fourball match. Saturday will be two rounds with a Foursomes match in the morning with another Fourball match in the afternoon. Sunday's tee times will kick-off around 8:00am with Singles matches and we hope to be done with awards around 2-3pm so the folks from DFW can get back home at a reasonable hour that evening.

Call for Players

As we get closer to this year's Texas Challenge Cup in October, I'm finding it difficult to field the team from DFW. I need players. Those of you who plan on playing please solicit your buddies to join our team. Right now, I've got 5 confirmed, 3 interested and need 8 more players.


For those of you who have expressed interested in playing, please confirm sometime within the next couple of weeks. My brother and I will have the final entry fees and logistics nailed down by then.

2008 Texas Challenge Course Selected

My brother and I played Star Ranch Golf Course on Friday, June 6. The course is located just outside of Austin in Hutto, Texas. Click on the title of this post for the link to the course's web site where you can see pictures of the course, facilities and other information.

I enjoyed the course very much. It is a mixture of links type and parkland type holes. The Championship tees measure the course out at just over 6300 yards, so it is not too daunting. The fairways and greens are undulating and the course is well bunkered. Water is in play on 5 or 6 holes, but there is sufficient bail-out room on almost every hole. On the day we played, it rained and the wind was up, but still the course played fairly and the greens rolled pretty true.

The course facilities are excellent with plenty of room on the driving range and great putting and chipping areas. There are separate banquet facilities from the main dining area so we'll have a space for eating and awards presentations.

I'll have more information up on the course and for those of us traveling, hotels and dining spots in a few days. We'll be closing the poll on the dates in the next 2-3 weeks, so if you've not made your preference on the weekend, please do so.

Tournament Update

Texas Challenge 2008 - Update

Players, we are homing in on the time frame for this years event. We'll be playing in the Austin area this year and hope to have the venue decided in the next month or so.
